EDIT:

Castle Crashers releases in Asia today, but Europe not so much.

Hi Everyone! If you live in anywhere in Asia (except Japan) where you have a local PSN, go there and download Castle Crashers and start smashing barbarians! Castle is out today!

Soooo…..over on the forum we had some posts about the EU version of Castle Crashers.

The basic question is this: Why do we have to resubmit code for a game that has already passed Sony in the United States? Here’s the long answer.

Back in the medieval times of console history when the PlayStation 1 became a hit, Sony decided to chop up their company into territories. So instead of one ubermind controlling everything, you had individual entities controlling their own fate in their own neighborhood. This made a lot of sense because we are talking about the stoneage of CDs and the dawn of the digital download age was still just a glimmer of an idea for some better future and a looooooooooong way off. Retail disks needed to be manufactured, packaged, shipped and warehoused locally until some lackey on a motorscooter delivered them to your local game store. (You remember…they place you used to buy new game disks at but now pretty much only pushes used games.) So under this model, each Sony territory became a little like a kingdom – Japan, North America, Asia and Europe; each with their own politics and intrigue. Even different weather.

Now fast forward a few generations (console, of course) and we still have the fiefdoms controlling their own destinies and the destinies of the publishers who wish to release digital product within their realms. Which means for us digital craftsmen, we have to abide by different rules for each. YAY! (Or in our case and the case of most publishers, not so yay.) So while with other platforms you have one hunk of code for all languages to be used in all territories, with Sony you have 6 (yes, count them six different hunks of code…hey WAIT!!!, you just said there were four territories, what’s up with that? As you can imagine in any fiefdom there can be multiple versions that make up a territory because each country has a different rating board. So we have North America, Europe (but not Germany), Europe (Germany and Australia [don't ask, I know Australia is in Oceania the last time I looked]), Asia (just Korea), Japan, Asia (everywhere there’s a PS but not Japan and Korea.) So there are your six builds (developer speak for the little guys inside your PSN that digitally paint the pictures that appear on your TV.)

As you can imagine, each of those builds is a little different and each has it’s own paperwork for submission and funnily enough, each fiefdom has its own testing and submission requirements. So a game that was released in the US won’t necessarily pass in another territory, even if the build is similar.

Some day some dude with really pale skin that has been living under a mountain is going to find a ring and unite the fiefdoms for ultimate domination (you remember, one ring to rule them all!) But until that happens we’ll have to keep living in this world created for retail disks even though we just use them for drink coasters now.

Cheers-

-john

PS Before you ask, no, I have no clue when Sony Europe will be done with testing and prop the build. Just remember, even if we pass, there are a number of weeks between passing and getting the game queued up in the PSN. Maybe we should have a “guess the euro release date contest..”

WTF!

Da freu ich mich wieder umsonst... warum?

Deswegen hier:

Castle Crashers (€13.99) Rating: PEGI 16 Nicht in Deutschland

Es kotzt tierisch an!

keine Panik!
